Franka Hörnschemeyer defines her architectural structures as sculptures. She exposes the historical, social and aesthetic structure of rooms layer by layer. She thus gives the visitor another perspective of spacial relations with the past, the present and the future - as seen in her controversial installation in the Paul-Löbe-Haus of the German House of Parliament.

Franka Hörnschemeyer will install 45 full length floor to ceiling wall-elements with movable joints. The wall-elements will be made from 'Kömacel', the same white recycled rigid foam boards used in the construction kits, so that the inside and outside of Hörnschemeyers museum will structurally and aesthetically correspond with each other.
The shape of the walls will form a type of labyrinth and passageway structure. The position of the elements will constantly change while manoeuvring oneself through the space. Walls can turn into corridors, corridors into newly constructed rooms and so the possibilities of opening and closing the wall-elements are endless.
An architectural and sculptural transformation will occur with each movement in the installation.

Paul-Löbe-Haus, Berlin, 1998-2001
In 2001 Franka Hörnschemeyer constructed a massive walk-through labyrinth style sculpture, made from grated walls, for the lowered courtyard of the Paul-Löbe-Haus - built opposite the Chancellory, for the employees and Members of Parliament.
Normally used as reinforcement inside the construction of concrete walls, Hörnschemeyer removed the outer wooden layer of the construction sheets to reveal the heavy grated iron framework. These metal frame work structures were then painted red and yellow and placed together to form a maze like structure modelled on ground-plans of the different developments around Berlins Spree river.

Lehmbruck-Saal
"Ein/räumen" Hamburger Kunsthalle, 2000
As a temporary installation, Hörnschemeyer redesigned the Wilhelm Lehmbrucksaal in the Hamburger Kunsthalle. She constructed a complex structure from grating which in its layering, explored the museums different architectural phases and forms to present the permanent collection of the Lehmbrucksaal in a new enviroment in Hörnschemeyers own aesthetic language.
