Viola Vahrson studied art history, philosophy und slavic literary studies at the Freien Universität Berlin.

While working on a research project on museology and the history of it, especially the quandaries raised in Berlin Museums regarding their collections after the fall of the Berlin wall, Vahrson founded, in 1995 the Richard-Schöne-Gesellschaft für Museumsgeschichte e.V. ( The Richard-Schöne-Society for the History of Museums) with other academics from different disciplines.

In 1996 Viola Vahrson worked as a guest curator at The Jacksonville Museum of Contemporary Art .

From 1997-1999 she completed an internship at the Berlinischen Galerie, Landesmuseum für Bildende Kunst, Photographie und Architektur (The State Gallery for Fine Arts, Photography and Architecture).

After this, Vahrson started her thesis: Repetition as an artistic strategy. The work of Elaine Sturtevant in a contemporary context.

Since April 2003, she is a member of the academic faculty of art theory and aesthetics in the department of Art History at the College of Fine Arts in Braunschweig.
